Praise in the press can only be a good thing for owners, and prospective investors at Las Colinas golf and Country Club. This time it's "Golf Monthly" who were bowled over. We reprint the article below, and offer a link to download the original pdf
Alicante, on Spain’s eastern seaboard, now boasts a tempting new star attraction thanks to the official opening of Las Colinas Golf and Country Club. This beautiful newcomer lies a few miles inland in a secluded, tranquil valley in southern Alicante, about halfway between the hilltop town of San Miguel de Salinas and the beaches of the Costa Blanca.
Access to the course is via a dramatic gorge which opens out onto an immaculately presented layout surrounded by hills, with traditional orange and lemon trees forming a distinctive border or backdrop to many fairways and greens. The bunker count may not be quite up there with Whistling Straits, but there are around 120 to negotiate, along with six lakes that begin to make their presence felt from the par-5 3rd.
Cabel B Robinson may not be a name with which you are overly familiar, but this bushy-moustachioed American course designer has been quietly going about his business, creating a number of much-talked about layouts this side of the Atlantic. Think Portugal’s highly regarded Praia D’El Rey; think Finca Cortesin in Malaga, the current home of the Volvo World Match Play.
Robinson was bowled over when he first set eyes on the Las Colinas landscape and made it his overriding aim to create a course that would blend perfectly into its environment. The former understudy to Robert Trent Jones explains: "The plants we have introduced to enhance the beauty of the course on its finish will be autochthonous [indigenous] since my final aim as a landscape architect is for the course to appear to be an integral part of the existing landscape."
You can now find out for yourself to what degree he has achieved these noble goals. And with green fees ranging from just €55 to €80, it won’t cost the earth to experience what some are already hailing the finest course in the region.
